North Macedonia between the Ukrainian crisis and its internal struggle – security implications
The third veto to the EU accession process of the Republic of North Macedonia posted by Bulgaria caused serious political turmoil in the country. The situation became ever more volatile after the start of the military conflict in Ukraine. Public opinion polls display serious disappointment in the European Union and serious presence of pro-Russian sentiment, although still far from being a majority of the population. Given that North Macedonia has undergone a series of hard compromises in order to start the accession negotiations with the EU, yet they have not started yet, leaves the country in a very uncertain position, open to “third party” influences. The uncertainty of the upcoming energetic situation in the country during the following winter only worsens the security dilemma.
