Seminarium „Outils et méthodes de la recherche en SHS” 20.06.2023: Circulation of the luxury objects between Poland and France in the 17th and 18th centuries. Three intriguing cases

Ośrodek Kultury Francuskiej i Studiów Frankofońskich UW zaprasza na spotkanie seminarium doktoranckiego Outils et méthodes de la recherche en SHS.
Circulation of the luxury objects between Poland and France in the 17th and 18th centuries. Three intriguing cases
The presentation will be devoted to issues related to the artistic purchases of European socio-financial elites of the 17th century. As part of it, three selected case studies will be presented, concerning luxury works of art of the 17th century, the fate of which is connected with the Commonwealth and France, showing the complex history of such items. One of them is a luxurious cabin, known from the 19th-century heliogravure, taken from Warsaw in 1807. The second one is a painting that belonged to Jan Kazimierz and was taken by him to France and recently resurfaced on the art market. Finally, the case of liturgical vestments, made with the secondary use of the ceremonial mantle of the French Order of the Holy Spirit and currently stored in Pilica, will be examined.
Mikołaj Mielcarski is a student at the Institute of Art History, University of Warsaw, currently completing his Master’s thesis under supervision of dr hab. Michał Wardzyński, prof. UW, on the topic of pietra dura in Polish early modern collections. His main scientific interests are early modern collecting, the relationship of art with natural history and science in this period, 16th-century Dutch engravings, and broadly understood northern mannerist art.
