Opis

Three decades after the breakup of Yugoslavia and its communism ‘with a human face’, the Western Balkan is facing numerous democratisation challenges and uncertain EU membership perspective. This region is characterised with notable signs of illiberal politics such as clientelism, corruption, media capture and continues to be vulnerable to external illiberal influence. In parallel, despite EU membership aspirations, the EU shows a notable enlargement fatigue that undermines the membership prospects for the region, and more importantly, EU’s leverage to promote rule of law and good governance reforms. However, despite the growing pessimism and cynicism, joined by mass brain drain, the growing access to the digital economy and the global market might be the light at the end of the tunnel…

Borjan Gjuzelov jest doktorem nauk politycznych Uniwersytetu Queen Mary w Londynie i specjalizuje się w reformach praworządności i demokratyzacji na Bałkanach Zachodnich. Jego najnowsze zainteresowania badawcze dotyczą społecznych skutków gospodarki cyfrowej w krajach rozwijających się.
