FROM ONE BANK TO THE OTHER. CONTEMPORARY FRANCE AS A NEW TYPE OF SOCIETY

Contemporary France leaving behind, not without difficulties, a historical period which culminated in the so-called “Trente Glorieuses” (1945-1975). The society at that time was industrial, i.e. organized by a structural conflict between the workers movement and the masters of industry. Now that conflict is no longer central, trade unions are weak, and new protests appeared, post-industrial, deeply loaded with cultural meanings dealing with gender, environment or ethical values, including the refusal of racism. The Nation-State was – and is still – “républicain”, according a strong importance to “laïcité”. But there is now a strong feeling of crisis, with tensions rising once the “République” or the “laïcité” are at stake, which is the case since migrants and Islam are now important issues. Identity politics are discussed. France is going to choose the President and the MPs soon, so it is a good moment to think its next evolution step towards s transformation – or decline.

Professor Emeritus of the EHESS, Michel Wieviorka was a Director of the Centre d’Analyse et d’Intervention Sociologiques (1993-2009), founded by Alain Touraine and a President of the International Sociological Association (2006-2010). He is the founding editor of a new Journal, Socio (since 2013), and a member of editorial boards of several other international journals. Together with Touraine and François Dubet, he developed the method of sociological intervention and employed it to the study of social movements, including Polish Solidarność. Following Max Weber’s concept of interpretative sociology, sociological intervention aims at understanding the subjective rationale of actors in the context of larger social conflicts. Wieviorka’s research has dealt with social movements, racism, terrorism, violence and cultural differences. His recent books include Evil (2012), The Front National – caught between extremism, populism and democracy (2013) and Demokracja jako sztuka walki (2022).
