Fear for the existence of the nation and Illiberal turn in Central and Eastern Europe

Since 2000s, the governments of several Central and East European countries have attacked liberal democracy, proposing to rebuild the national community on illiberal principles. Part of this war against liberalism is rooted in fears for the nation’s existence, helping to better understand the new role of the state, protector of the community, the crusade against several checks & balances and xenophobic,  anti-gender and anti-LGBT policies.

 

Roman Krakovsky is Lecturer in history of Central and Eastern Europe at Global Studies Institute (University of Geneva). Ph.D at Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne. Author and commentator on Central and East European politics. His recent books include L’Europe centrale et orientale de 1918 à la chute du mur de Berlin (Armand Colin, 2017), State and Society in Communist Czechoslovakia (I. B. Tauris, 2018) and Populisme en Europe centrale et orientale. Un advertisement pour le monde (2019). He is currently working on Histoire de l’Europe à l’époque contemporaine (Humensis, forthcoming 2024), Atlas d’Europe centrale et orientale de 1815 à nos jours (forthcoming 2024) and an essay on routes to modernisation of Central and Eastern Europe since the 19th century.
