Before #MeToo. 40 years of institutional and militant struggles against gender-based violence

Since the launch of #MeToo, the issue of gender-based violence, sexual and domestic violence in particular, seems particularly visible in the media and political space. Rather than a historical break, this moment prolongs and renews feminist mobilizations that emerged in the 1970s and gradually inserted themselves into institutions. Thus, this communication will aim to retrace some of the militant and state milestones in the problematization of gender violence in order to seek to understand what #MeToo is doing to the public problem.

Pauline Delage is a sociologist, CNRS researcher, attached to CRESPPA-CSU. Her work focuses on the transformations of feminist movements and public action against gender-based violence. In addition to numerous articles, she recently co-edited the book „Les violences sexistes après #MeToo” (Presses des Mines, 2022, with Catherine Cavalin, Jaercio de Silva, Irène Despontin, Bibia Pavard and Delphine Lacombe) and published „Feminisms in the world: 23 stories of a planetary revolution” (Textuel, 2020, with F. Gallot), „Women’s rights, everything can disappear” (Textuel, 2018), „Domestic violence. From feminist struggle to the public cause” (Presses de Sciences Po, 2017).
