Abstract:

Restoring identities and taking a stand against geopolitical irredentism. Such is the profound essence of these “geographical imaginaries”  that are resurfacing at the edges of Europe in the post-modernity of the beginning of this century. Fragmented by the geopolitical ruptures and ideological uncertainties of our time, a sounding board for populism and radical nationalism, and in contact with the hybrid power of Russia, Central and Eastern Europe is emerging as the matrix for the resurgence of an ancient model of regional integration aimed at fortifying its political and cultural unity: the Intermarium. Initiated by the Polish leader Józef Pilsudski (1867-1935) based on the model of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, the Międzymorze Federation is also now more than actual with the creation in 2016 by Poland and Croatia of the 3 Seas Initiative. However this geopolitical project is also carried by radical right movements in Central and Eastern Europe in the framework of a potential “conservative” and “identarian” revolution”. This presentation aims to examine through history the evolution of such project and its doctrines.
